This year I’m joining Urban Barn to share their wonderful campaign called “Blanket The Country“.
About 2 years ago, we decided to get a pet for our kids. I grew up on a farm and Brent grew up with dogs around his home, so it was something we both thought would be great for the kids to grow up with as well. As much as Brent and I like dogs, owning a pet dog was going to be to much of an commitment at this stage in our lives—its a pet we would like to have down the road when our boys are a bit older, and we were completely done having kids (and at the time, were in a bigger home).
Our next option was a cat. I grew up with one in my childhood home so I was familiar with how independent cats are which overall fit in better with our family lifestyle.
The next step was figuring out where to get a pet cat and I instantly thought about adopting being the best option for us. I love the idea of giving an abandoned animal a home and fresh start at life! Because there are so many cats and kittens available, I knew we would have a good chance of finding a baby to grow with us as a family. It was important to me to find a kitten vs. a cat because I didn’t want to bring a mature cat into our home, especially with our “sometimes” overbearing boys! We needed to adopt a kitten that wasn’t quite established yet, could grow with our kids and in need of a loving home.
You can read more about our adoption story with our kitty Rue, here.
What is Blanket The Country?
Blanket The Country began in 2012, where Urban Barn has been actively donating more than 58,000 blankets to shelters across Canada through their Blanket the Country initiative. This year, Urban Barn has partnered with the SPCA and its affiliated shelters across the country to give a little warmth and spread the warm fuzzies to an animal in need this season, from October 5th – November 4th.
When customers donate $5 at any Urban Barn location, they’ll deliver a warm fleece blanket to an animal shelter in your community to make rescue animals feel right at home.
These fleece blankets help the animals feel like they’re safe and are crucial for the comfort and well-being of these pets in shelter, while they wait for their forever home!
Adopting a pet into your home takes a lot of courage because you don’t exactly know what types of experiences that animal has endured prior to adoption. But what we can do is give these animals a second chance to live a happier life! I couldn’t imagine not adopting a pet after having such a great experience with our kitty Rue. Yes at first, it was a huge adjustment for our kitty, especially her being so shy and getting used to the boys… but if anything, she is living her best life and has become a huge part of our family. She also loves the attention she receives from our boys :).
Pictured above is Rue sitting in the Mondo Chair, from Urban Barn. This chair feels like you’re sitting on a cloud and I love the simplicity of the ultra-modern black frame — I think Rue loves it too ;)
