I love everything about wood. The texture, grain, colouring, warmth, and the fact that you can paint it! I find myself always doing DIY projects with wood. There is so much that can be done with wood and so many ways to be creative with it! I like making new DIY projects for the holidays and this year I was given a whole lot of wood slices in different sizes – I needed to find something to do with them! So I decided to make a Wood Slice Garland, hoping it would turn out how I imagined. It is pretty simple to cut wood into slices… you just need to know how to use a chainsaw (I don’t trust myself with one of these), so I leave the wood cutting up to my dad or dad-in-law. Wood is found everywhere, usually free… so if you like this DIY, give it a go :)
How I tackled this DIY Wood Slice Garland:
Supplies
• Wood (around 3″ in diameter)
• Chainsaw
• Drill
• Chalkboard Paint and Chalk
• Foam Brush
• Wire
• Jute Rope or Ribbon
Instructions
1. Find a piece of wood around 3 inches in diameter (branches work best) and cut into the number of slices you wish to use.
2. Let the wood slices dry out inside for a week or so. *Try to find wood that won’t crack
3. Use a foam brush and in a circular motion apply the chalkboard paint onto the wood slices.
4. Let dry for an 1 + hours.
5. Drill tiny holes onto the top of wood slice. *If you are using ribbon drill two holes on top of wood slice, side by side, so that you can weave the ribbon through each hole (with ribbon you don’t need to use the wire)
6. Cut the wire long enough to stick through wood slice hole and twist so it forms a loop. *Leave enough space for the jute rope to slide through the wire loop.
7. Slide the jute rope through each wire loop wood slice. *If you have a specific area you wish to hang wood garland, make sure to measure with the jute rope before you apply the wood slices.
8. Once you have all pieces of wood onto the jute rope, position and space each to your own preference.
9. Once all wood slices are in place, twist the wood slice around the jute rope so that it won’t move.
10. Tie loops at the end of jute rope where you wish to hang
11. Write your message and hang!
